>>I personally find the vague "socially conscious" theme to be nauseating - kind of like Whole Foods

I hear you. I am glad I am not the only one to feel like that :)

Personally I think the best line of this article is: “If the meeting’s bad, at least the drinks were free.” Hilarious! :D

C.

I really appreciate your comments and I am glad that you enjoyed Sarah's gathering.

What I am ultimately trying to say is that it's important to find a balance. I am not saying that one is more important, or better, than the other - but that that when implementing one over the other, it's important to pair goals with incentive and perceived obstacles.

I also find the whole "socially conscious" theme nauseating. It is, of course, really good for the sponsor, as a lot of people show up and there isn't a lot of thought/depth to get between the attendee and the product placement and depending on the sponsor, and as you've seen, the sponsor is always quite interesting/generally responsible, that, too, is just fine.

It is important, though, to know a spade for a spade. A free beer fest with a concentration on let's say civil rights typically sheds as much light on the topic as an under-the-sea dance teaches anything about marine biology.

I know that's something Sarah's trying to work into the structure of her next meeting. Her last was a meet and greet, of course. Now, how does she move forward in a substantial and meaningful way with the education component of her meeting?

Good points, Alex. I agree that these parties should ask more of us - I'd enjoy working on a project or collaborating on a problem just as much as I'd enjoy the free beer. And I personally find the vague "socially conscious" theme to be nauseating - kind of like Whole Foods.

That said, I thought Sarah's event was a good one, and I'm looking forward to the next one. While also keeping it on the down-low.

Make them less like keggers, more like quilting circles!
