Hi Tony,

Thanks for the feedback.

I see your point of view, and we're watching what's happening with OpenId, OpenSocial, OAuth, et al. We've engineered our identity solution to be neutral and we don't rely on Facebook - we can use alternate identities.

We won't ever require that customers use their Facebook identity to use The Point, but we do think that it's useful to let people use the identity they've already created with Facebook on our site, as it avoids creating yet another identity on the 'net.

It remains to be seen whether Facebook learned its lesson from Beacon - the improved FB Connect architecture (which originates from Beacon) and policies suggest that they have, but I, too will be watching them with a skeptical eye.

This is a great site. I've piled up quite a pile of Groupons and I look forward to saving a ton of money over the next few months. Bravo!
BUT I am dismayed to see The Point jumping onto the idea that Facebook is a legitimate provider of portable identities. Sure, single sign-on is a hugely great idea - but allowing a single (privately owned, non-democratic) entity to own these identities is disturbing. Especially Facebook given their history of sketchy regard for user privacy.

We can do better. And in the meantime we can do without.

Thanks and keep up the otherwise great work.
